4.2. Battery Backup Options

4.2.1. Introduction

For environments where uptime is critical, a battery-backed power source is often required to for hardware to continue functioning in the event of irregular power input. Rigado has a couple of recommendations that can be used with the Cascade–500 IoT Gateway.

First, a few notes about how the Cascade-500 works with power inputs and outputs:

  1. RJ45 port for Ethernet – Ethernet cable can be powered by either a PoE (Power-over-Ethernet) switch (end-span) or injector (mid-span). It complies with IEEE 802.3af and is therefore compatible with 802.3at.
  2. Coaxial barrel power jack input – needs a 5.5mmx2.1mm plug with a positive center. The voltage is +5VDC (min 4.5V, max 5.5V) and a current rating of 2A.
  3. USB Type A output – outputs +5VDC at up to 500mA.

The barrel power jack takes priority to allow for high current loads that do not meet 802.3af standards. If you remove the DC barrel jack while PoE is connected, the gateway may power cycle. If you remove PoE while the barrel jack is connected, the Cascade-500 should remain powered by the barrel power jack.
